Synopsis

Satu Bumi is a story set during the period between the Japanese Occupation up till the Independence of Singapore. It tells of the story of a young Chinese girl named Tan Swee Lian who was adopted by a Malay family. Tan Swee Lian was renamed Aminah by Pak Durhakim. She fell in love with Pak Durhakim’s son Jati. But in order to protect her from the Japanese Pak Durhakim could not allow the love to blossom as he wanted her to be known only as Jati’s ‘sister’. Jati left home on the day Aminah married his cousin, Malek.

While in Malaysia Jati was active in politics. He joined the Angkatan Pemuda Islam, API and later Kesatuan Muda Melayu, KMM after the Japanese surrendered. He met Ah Sin alias Hashim who was Aminah’s brother. Ah Sin had joined the Bintang Tiga and hid in the jungle. At last he was arrested by the authorities. Jati was advised by a sympathiser in the Special Branch to return to Singapore because he could not guarantee that he would not be arrested also because of his association with Ah Sin. Jati took his advice and was recruited by the PAP in Singapore.

Meanwhile in Singapore, Malek was arrested and beaten up by the Japanese while trying to steal rice. He was taken by a group of Chinese to Alexandra hospital and met Pak Durhakim who was also receiving treatment there. Pak Durhakim had fallen from the roof of a mosque while being taunted by the Japanese to bring down the loudspeaker which had the Union Jack emblem. He later chose to become a ‘mute’ and lost the will to live. Malek later joined the Bintang Tiga and was shot by the British soldiers in the jungle of Kota Tinggi.

Aminah had to face hardship and work as a samsui woman to support the family. Word got around the she had renounced Islam and reverted to her old ways. This jolted Pak Durhakim’s conscience and he bagan to speak again.

All the while, Jati had been observing and secretly sending money to Aminah. He later wrote a letter inviting her to witness the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday celebration at Jamiyah. It was on this fateful day that Aminah and Pak Durhakim were killed by the rioters while traveling in a lorry.
